Phishing & Malware Financial Impact Assessment

Behind the calculation

Support

Last Update a year ago

We estimate your organization’s risk exposure through a structured financial model that combines company-specific metrics with industry-wide statistics.

First, we calculate your base impact per threat using two factors:

  • Revenue factor: $25 M × 0.0001 = $2,500

  • Employee factor: 150 × $50 = $7,500

We choose the higher amount, in this case $7,500, because companies with 100–200 employees are statistically 2.5× more likely to fall victim to phishing attacks compared to smaller firms (KnowBe4).

Next, we apply a 1.8× industry multiplier (reflecting the higher risk in Technology Services) and a risk tolerance factor of 1.0×, yielding a base impact of $13,500 per threat.

Incorporating Threat Likelihood and Frequency

Our model then factors in current threat probabilities. For instance, a 0.1 threat load (e.g., a single phishing attempt with 10% chance of success) results in a weekly estimated impact of $1,350 ($13,500 × 0.1). We also compare patterns over time — a 10% drop in weekly threat load signals improved security posture.

Benchmarking with Broader Industry Data

To ensure our estimates remain grounded in reality, we reference global phishing trends:

  • On average, employees in a 1,000-person company face 2,330 phishing attempts per year, with about 466 clicked (Hoxhunt).

  • 33% of untrained employees fail phishing simulations (Guardz.com).

  • Globally, 80% of security incidents start with phishing, costing organizations roughly $17,700 per minute (keepnetlabs.com).

  • Phishing is responsible for 36% of data breaches in the US, with the average breach costing $4.88 million globally (ibm.com).

These statistics underscore the critical importance of tailored risk modeling — and explain why mid-sized companies like yours, with 150 employees, face heightened phishing vulnerability.

Why This Matters

Unlike generic calculators, our model scales off your real-world context—revenue, headcount, industry risk, and current threat detection data—while aligning with global benchmarks. This gives you a clear, actionable financial impact estimate, enabling smarter prioritization: is it time to enhance training, deploy advanced email defenses, or invest in phishing-resistant infrastructure?

ROI on Cyber Defense
Investing in proactive security isn't just protection — it's cost avoidance. With phishing responsible for 36% of data breaches and average breach costs exceeding $4.88 million, even a single prevented incident can pay for years of protection. Companies with active threat monitoring and takedown services reduce successful phishing rates by up to 70%, directly lowering financial risk and reputational damage.
